Currency and Banking in The Cayman Islands
+ My Favorites

CURRENCY

The local currency is the Cayman dollar (CI$), which is broken down into 100 cents. Coins come in 1, 5, 10 and 25 cent pieces, while notes are issued in 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 dollar denominations.

U.S. currency is accepted virtually everywhere, but change is often returned in Cayman Dollars. .

TAX

The only tax is a 10% tax on all accommodations, there is no sales tax. For current exchange rate, see the see the currency converter under the Trip Planning section on the Caribbean home page.

TIPPING

Some restaurants include a 15% charge, but others do not. Itis worth asking when the cheque comes to know for sure. Taxi drivers have come to expect 10% to 15%. Hotel staff like porters and bellmen generally recieve $1 per bag. Larger hotels usually include a service charge between 6% and 10%. All-inclusive resorts don't expect to be tipped.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES

Traveler's cheques are accepted throughout the country.

CREDIT CARDS

Most major credit cards are accepted everywhere. Many can be used to obtain cash advances at banks and ATMs.

BANKING HOURS AND AUTOMATED TELLERS

Banks hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
